Update: As some have expressed qualms about going Intel with the recent Field-Effect Transistor biasing issue (potentially affecting SATA 3GB/s on some Sandybridge), I have included an alternative AMD/ATI option.

Rift Beta updates inc – Patch goes live and RP-PVP servers gone!

In Gaming, MMO, RPG on February 11, 2011 at 6:58 pm

A new update has gone live on the beta servers. It could be that they’re updating the servers for beta testing, but at least it’s nice to see a bit more activity than the usual you’re-not-allowed-to-play.

Rift beta patch live as of the 11th of Feb, 2011

The download is almost 200MB so it probably just has a few bug fixes and maybe that PVP server change.  My download’s finished and applying as we speak. I’d like to at least be able to log into the game and see the offline shards. +1 for activity!

Rift Beta Video Review – But you’re not in Telara anymore either

In Gaming, MMO, RPG on February 10, 2011 at 7:15 pm

I Need My Fix
It’s been only a few days since I was last on Rift: Beta, and the withdrawal symptoms are starting to become severe . For a hardened MMO and RPG veteran who had grown disillusioned with them all, that’s saying something.

Rift is far prettier than WoW

The playing of Rift over the Beta 6 weekend was marred partly by guilt over the robotics coursework I was supposed to be doing. Read the rest of this entry »

Starcraft 2 Tauren Marine Confirmed!

In Gaming, RTS on July 11, 2010 at 8:40 pm

Recalling Blizzard’s April Fool’s joke, many were saddened that the Tauren Marine would be a no-show. Howerver, most of us were quite happy with the decision because the thought of a Tauren Marine in Starcraft 2 is just plain ridiculous.

But all is not lost, for I have a reliable insider source who has confirmed that Starcraft 2 will in fact feature the Tauren Marine!

Yup, you heard right! But there’s one tiny caveat …

WoW Anti Troll measure: Real ID on forums

In Funny, Gaming, MMO, RPG on July 9, 2010 at 6:19 pm

Hello folks. It’s been a while since I made a blog post, but this came up and it seemed like as good a reason as any to start procrastinating on my applied maths research through blogging.

Some of you may have heard of Blizzard’s plan with the battle.net update merger to implement a Real ID system for both in-game identification (across main characters and alts) as well as the forum.

Dimitiri aka Comrade Leon-Stalin Junior has a few strong opinions about that Blizzard move…

NVidia® OptiX™ at SIGGRAPH 2009

NVIDIA announced it’s OptiX real-time ray tracing engine at SIGGRAPH 2009, yesterday. You may recall my previous article on how GPU-based ray tracing may become the future of 3D graphics in games with the release of the GT300 family of GPUs. The fact remains, rasterised graphics ARE currently much faster than ray traced rendering, so much more powerful GPUs will be required for real-time ray tracing in games.

As David Kirk of NVIDIA put it, “Ray tracing is the technology of the future and it always will be!”

The new APIs/Engines that NVidia revealed at SIGGRAPH include additional support for applications programmers. The OptiX interactive engine is a ray tracing pipeline which will allow developers to use the C programming language in order to leverage ray tracing in their applications.

Call of The Crusade

Plans for the next major free content update in Blizzard’s World of Warcraft are already well under way. Both the US and Europe servers should be fully patched by sometime tomorrow and all set for players to enjoy the the cool new content.

The update will bring a slew of new features to the table, catering to two main types of WoW play, Player-Vs-Environment (PvE) and  Player-Vs–Player (PvP), while also introducing some additional features, updates and balance changes. These updates include the Crusader’s Coliseum (a new PvE update), an all-new battleground called the ‘The Isle of Conquest’ and the much-awaited  Druid animal form customization feature.

Order of War Demo

Good news old chaps!

Captain Xsistor reporting from the front! The much-awaited RTS (Real-Time Strategy) game, ‘Order of War’ has been released on Steam as a demo digital download. Yet another mediocre World War 2 strategy game? Hard to say. The two RTS games that I was looking forward to this year are Starcraft 2 and Order of War. Square Enix did ‘wow’ us a while back when they released their trailer showcasing some of the epic combat with large armies consisting of tanks, air support, artillery, infantry and the works. Brilliant visuals and awesome sound effects rounded off the trailer leaving every World War 2 and RTS  junkie curious, if not hungry for more .

The game is set to release in Sept ’09 but as Square Enix announces on their website, you can preorder right away if you find you like the demo or if you’re just perfectly confident that this game will deliver above and beyond what the Holy Trinity — World in Conflict, Company of Heroes, and Men of War — can currently manage.

The boxed version is available for pre-order on Amazon for £17.96 with free delivery thrown in– not bad. A good deal better than if you’re American, as you’ll be paying $39.99 for your copy. Read the rest of this entry »
